What is simultaneous interpreting and when is it preferred?
Simultaneous translation is a type of translation that is done simultaneously with the speaker’s speech. The interpreter listens to the speech through headphones and a microphone in a special booth while simultaneously translating it into the target language. The audience also follows this translation with their headphones. It is generally preferred in situations where there are many participants and time is critical, such as large conferences, international meetings, congresses and seminars.
What equipment is needed for simultaneous interpreting?
Interpreter Booths: Specially designed booths for interpreters to work in isolation from noise.
Interpreter Consoles: Control units with microphone and headphone systems used for interpreters to listen to the speech and translate.
Transmitters and Receivers: Devices that transmit the speaker’s and interpreters’ voices to the participants wirelessly.
Headphones: Headphones used for participants to listen to the translation.
Sound System: System consisting of speakers and amplifiers necessary for the speaker’s voice to be heard clearly.
What is the difference between Simultaneous Interpreting and Consecutive Interpreting?
Simultaneous interpretation means instant translation. In this method, the interpreter listens to the speaker in a special booth through a microphone and headphones while simultaneously interpreting. The audience can follow the translation simultaneously through their headphones. In this difficult process that requires high concentration, there are usually two interpreters in the booth. Interpreters translate in turns every 30 minutes on average, depending on the flow of the conference. Special training and experience are essential for successful simultaneous interpretation. Consecutive interpretation is also known as consecutive interpretation. In this method, the interpreter waits for the speaker to complete his/her words and then translates. In cases where the speaker gives long speeches of up to 4-5 minutes, it is very important for the interpreter to take notes. For successful consecutive interpretation, the interpreter must do research and have knowledge about the subject of the meeting in advance. Otherwise, especially in technical or legal matters, incorrect translations may occur due to lack of terminology.
What should I pay attention to when getting simultaneous translation services?

What does relay translation mean and how does it work?
Relay interpreting (also known as indirect interpreting) is a translation method used when direct interpretation is not possible. Essentially, an intermediary language is used when translating from one language to another.
How Does It Work?
Speaker Speaks: The speaker speaks in the original language (e.g., Japanese).
First Interpreter Interprets: The first interpreter (interpreter A) translates the speaker’s words into a more common language (e.g., English). This language is the relay language.
Second Interpreter Interprets: The second interpreter (interpreter B) listens to interpreter A’s English translation and translates it into the target language (e.g., Turkish).
Listeners Listen: The audience in the target language listens to interpreter B’s translation.
Example:
- A Japanese speaker is speaking.
- Interpreter A is translating Japanese into English.
- Interpreter B is translating English into Turkish.
- Turkish-speaking listeners listen to translator B’s Turkish translation.
Who covers the accommodation and travel expenses of the translators?
Generally, in simultaneous or consecutive interpreting services, the accommodation and travel expenses of the interpreters are covered by the party requesting the service, i.e. the customer or the organization owner.
Detailed Description:
Travel Expenses: The interpreters’ transportation expenses to the event location (airplane, train, bus ticket, taxi fare, gasoline, etc.) are usually covered by the customer. If the interpreter is traveling with his/her own vehicle, it is also common practice to pay a certain fee per kilometer (gasoline, depreciation, etc.).
Accommodation: If the event lasts more than one day or the interpreter needs to come from a long distance to the event location, the accommodation (hotel) expenses are also covered by the customer. Accommodation in 3 or more star hotels is generally preferred.
City Transportation: The interpreters’ city transportation expenses (taxi, public transportation, etc.) during the event can also be covered by the customer or a certain amount can be paid as a daily allowance.
Per diem: In some cases, translators may also be paid a per diem for meals and other personal expenses.
